Netflix took a decade to achieve a remarkable achievement whereas Disney+ was able to achieve the same in the span of 16 months. We are talking about the 100 million(M) paid subscribers. Disney+ planned to achieve the same by 2025 but thanks to the Wuhanvirus and IPL and achieved the goal way ahead.

28 M subscribers out of 100 M subscribers are Indians. Disney+ owns Hotstar, the company which has the streaming rights for the world's biggest cricketing league.

However, what made an entertainment company foray into streaming services, any idea?

Before Disney+, Disney was streaming all its content on Netflix. Thereafter, Bob Iger, the then CEO of Disney, came up with the idea of a streaming service to stay ahead in the upcoming battles. Even Nike pulled out all its products from Amazon in 2019. That’s been the trend that will continue as we progress more in the digital age, but why so?

It’s more of data and monetary game. Netflix had an upper hand on the data about its consumers. It knew what kind of content which consumer would love to watch. In the coming times, if Disney didn’t pull out, Netflix might have an upper hand in signing the deal with Disney. That’s why an entertainment company has to change itself to a streaming company as well. It has now more data insights about its users and may come up with more interesting series and movies in the coming decade.

It’s more of data war 😄. Companies competing with each other for data, that’s where the monetary gains lie in the digital economy. Data is the only oil in the internet economy.
