How much milk did India consume in the pandemic year, 2020?

India consumed 81K metric tons milk which was way higher than the consumption of European union, ranked second, of only 33K metric tons.

Back in 1950’s–60’s, India was a milk deficient nation and mostly dependent on imports. However, by the year of 1998 India overtook United States and became the largest milk producer in the world. India has maintained that title till date, reigning for over 23 year at the helm. Transforming itself from being an importer to an exporter.

How did we transform?

All thanks to the Operation Flood(OF), 1970, which helped India in becoming self reliant. Further made dairy farming India’s largest self-sustainable rural employment generator. The most innovative part of the revolution was the production of skim milk powder out of buffalo milk. Thereafter, the creation of milk co-operatives and linkages of the dairy producers across India. AMUL, the taste of India, played a huge role too, which is a co-operative society for dairy farmers.

India contributes around 20% of the total milk production. Per NDDB, Between 1991 and 2018, the per capita availability of milk increased more than 2 fold from 178 (gm/day) to 394 (gm/day). Simultaneously, the milk production in India increased from 55.6 million tonnes to 187.7 million tonnes, growing at 4 per cent compounded annually. Ironically only 9 states have per capita availability of milk equal to greater than the national standards. Leaving a huge cap for rest of the states/UT’s. Refer to NDDB site for more details about your state’s milk production.

That’s it about milk for the day. By the way do you know the best time to drink milk 🥛?
